Brain tumours are a life-altering diagnosis, not just for patients but also for their loved ones. The journey can feel overwhelming, isolating, and challenging. Yorkshire’s Brain Tumour Charity (YBTC) has long been a beacon of support for individuals and families impacted by brain tumours, and now, we’re taking our mission even further.
We’re thrilled to share news of two brand-new peer support groups in Leeds, launched to provide connection, understanding, and community to those affected by brain tumours.
1. Leeds Maggies Group – Starting Friday 17th January (then every third Friday of the month) 10.30am - midday
This group meets monthly and is facilitated by YBTC staff and trained volunteers who have personal experience with brain tumours.
Sessions will be held in the wonderful, calming space at the Maggies Centre, St James’s University Hospital, Alma Street, Leeds, LS9 7BE.
2. Weekend Group in Farsley – Starting Saturday 18th January (then every third Saturday of the month) 10.30am - midday
We have started this weekend group to offer an accessible peer support group option for people who struggle to attend other weekday support groups due to their other commitments.
These drop-in sessions will be hosted in the friendly Loft Coffee Shop, Springfield Commercial Centre, 13A Bagley Lane, Springfield Mills, Leeds, LS28 5LY.
What to Expect:
Empathy and Connection: Meet others who understand the unique struggles and triumphs of living with a brain tumour.
Resource Sharing: Learn about local resources and coping strategies to navigate the journey.
Why Peer Support Matters
Peer support is transformative. While medical teams address physical health, the emotional and social aspects of a brain tumour journey can often feel neglected. Peer support groups fill this gap, fostering connections between individuals who understand each other's experiences first-hand. Research shows that peer support can reduce stress, improve mental health, and even enhance overall well-being.
Get Involved
If you or someone you know could benefit from these Leeds-based groups, YBTC welcomes you to join. Both groups are free to attend, thanks to the generosity of donors, community supporters and volunteers. Whether you’re a patient navigating the complexities of your diagnosis or a family member seeking understanding, or someone who has been bereaved by a brain tumour, these peer groups offer a space to heal, connect, and grow.
To book to attend one of our Peer Support Groups, visit: Events | YBTC and select the group you are interested in visiting.
