Celebrating Corporate Partnerships this Brain Tumour Awareness Month: Walker Morris LLP & Yorkshire's Brain Tumour Charity

At Yorkshire's Brain Tumour Charity (YBTC), our corporate partnerships play a vital role in helping us provide crucial support to individuals and families affected by brain tumours. One such partnership that has flourished over the past year is with Walker Morris LLP, a leading commercial law firm in Leeds. We recently sat down with Abbie Thomas, Associate in Infrastructure and Energy at Walker Morris, to reflect on their incredible contributions and experiences working with YBTC.

Choosing YBTC: A Personal Connection

Each year, Walker Morris follows a nomination process to select a charity to support. Last year, YBTC was chosen thanks to a heartfelt nomination from a colleague whose child had been diagnosed with a brain tumour. The charity had played a significant role in supporting her family through their journey, and she wanted to give back.

"I've spoken to the member of staff that nominated the charity, and it's just so nice to hear how much [YBTC's] work really can impact a family," Abbie shared. "Everyone was quite keen to help... It’s really nice to hear a personal story rather than just a general one about how the charity can help."

Fundraising Efforts: A Mix of Creativity and Team Spirit

Walker Morris embraced a combination of their own initiatives and YBTC’s organised events to maximise their fundraising efforts. From bake sales to skydives, their team found inventive ways to raise funds and awareness.

"We have our own active events like different runs, but we also took part in YBTC’s ‘Coastal Ramble,’ which got great feedback from our team," Abbie explained. "It’s great because we can do our own fundraisers while also getting involved in charity-led events, offering something different that more people are willing to participate in."

One of the most memorable fundraising efforts was their highly competitive step challenge in August. "What we didn’t realise was how competitive our firm is! People were going for lunchtime runs down the canal, doing late-night walks—anything to get to the top of the leaderboard! But it was fantastic because it got everyone talking and connecting with colleagues they might not usually work with."

Other successful initiatives included:

  • Bake sales – A simple yet effective way to raise funds while bringing colleagues together over coffee and treats.

  • Christmas raffle – A highly anticipated annual event where employees eagerly checked the platform daily to see who won the top prizes.

  • Skydive challenge – A thrilling event where four team members took the plunge for charity, raising substantial funds in the process

A Strong, Supportive Partnership

Throughout their time fundraising for YBTC, Walker Morris found the charity team to be incredibly approachable and supportive.

"They were really personable, and we've always been in touch. If we weren’t fundraising for a Yorkshire-based charity, I probably wouldn’t have engaged as much. But working with YBTC has encouraged us to stay connected and get involved more actively," Abbie noted.

Looking Ahead

The partnership between Walker Morris LLP and YBTC has not only made a tangible impact on those affected by brain tumours but has also strengthened connections within the Walker Morris team. Their fundraising activities brought employees together in new ways, fostering teamwork and camaraderie while contributing to a vital cause.

We are incredibly grateful for the dedication and enthusiasm of the Walker Morris team and look forward to continuing our work together to support those affected by brain tumours across Yorkshire.
