At Yorkshire’s Brain Tumour Charity, we love to work with our ambassadors, benefactors, and the local community to deliver Yorkshire-based fundraising events for Yorkshire-based families!
Our annual Coastal Ramble will take place on the 21st of September, where team YBTC take on the 21.5 mile walk along the Cinder Track between Whitby and Scarborough which encompasses some of the most beautiful coastal views in Yorkshire including Robin Hood’s Bay.
In 2023, 70 participants joined us for a day of walking and building community and raised over £24,000 of vital funds to help YBTC continue their invaluable work. This helped us to continue to deliver our peer support groups, telephone support (including benefits and welfare advice), wellbeing walks and research into the treatments and causes of brain tumours!
Stephanie Dalton walked in 2023 with friends Steven, Sindy, Diane, Lindsey and Debbie in memory of her husband, George, who in 2020 lost his battle with a rare PXA brain tumour. Stephanie told us: “We enjoyed [not only] seeing friends [including] Debbie but also having the opportunity to talk to people at the event about why they were there and share our experiences. It really helped us to feel like part of the community. We received lots of support while we were walking, it was amazing! And we got to see a part of Yorkshire we would not otherwise have been able to see”.
What can new walkers expect?
No matter whether you are an experienced walker or a novice, you can choose the length of the route that you would like to travel! We will have marshals ready to support you at Robin Hood’s Bay (at 6.5 miles into the track), Ravenscar (at 11 miles), Hayburne Wyke (at 14.5 miles) and Cloughton (at 16.5 miles), and a “recovery vehicle” to drop walkers off at the car park. If you are planning to take on the full 21.5 mile journey, the average time to complete the track is 8 hours. There is a small section of the track which was closed in June due to storm damage- in the event that this has not yet reopened we will provide maps of the diversion and marshals to help direct you!
The walk is relatively flat, however, there are some bumps so we recommend wearing appropriate footwear, and packing snacks and drinks to keep you going!
We will also have a scheduled rest at Revenscar Tearooms, so that you can stock up on refreshments!
We will begin our journey at Sainsbury’s Car Park in Scarborough (YO12 5ER) at 8am, where coaches will be waiting to drop us at the start line in Whitby and escort us back to the car park when we finish our walk, so you can be awarded your medal!
