Improving steroid safety in glioblastoma
Improving steroid safety in glioblastoma
It has been observed that steroids may reduce the efficiency of standard treatments for glioblastoma.
This one year study looks at new selective steroids.
Official Title:
Improving steroid safety in glioblastoma
Lead Researcher:
Laura Matthews
Where:
Leeds, West Yorkshire
When:
1 year, 2020
Cost:
£55,000
Research Type:
Glioblastoma
Glioblastoma (GBM) tumours directly cause inflammation and swelling which is further compounded by each component of standard GBM therapy - surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
Anti inflammatory steroids are prescribed to reduce inflammation and form an essential part of most cancer therapies. Whilst reducing inflammation in almost every patient it has been observed that steroids may reduce the efficiency of standard treatments.
A new generation of anti-inflammatory drugs is required.
This ia a one year project funded solely by Yorkshire's Brain Tumour Charity.
Significant data has been obtained previously from a 3 year PhD studentship researching this subject.
It is planned to screen four new selective steroids to determine if they can – with equal effect to conventional steroids – reduce inflammation in GBM cells, without influencing the efficacy of radiotherapy or chemotherapy.
All experiments will use current widely prescribed steroids as controls.
