Funding life-changing research

Here at Yorkshire's Brain Tumour Charity, we are passionate about funding research into treatments and to ultimately find a cure for brain tumours.

The research we fund is Yorkshire based, innovative and world-class.

Although we are only a small charity, we can make a huge difference by funding new research to get it off the ground. This is often called pump-priming and it enables researchers, academics and clinicians, of all levels and across a range of disciplines, to be able to undertake proof-of-principle studies to facilitate the award of further funding.

Treatments for brain tumours have improved little over the last 40 years and so research needs to be undertaken so we can find the breakthroughs of tomorrow.

If you are fundraising or donating to YBTC and you specifically want to fund research, we are able to restrict your donation. Please contact us on 0113 340 0111 or email info@yorksbtc.org.uk.

Around 9000 new cases of primary brain tumours are diagnosed every year in the UK, 15 each week in Yorkshire.
They are the biggest cancer killer of children and adults under the age of 40.

Treatments have remained relatively unchanged for over 35 years. Yorkshire’s Brain Tumour Charity funds innovative Yorkshire-based research to find treatments and ultimately a cure, for a devastating disease that affects so many people. We want to drive forward progress in brain tumour research to provide better outcomes for all those diagnosed and living with a primary brain tumour.

To achieve this we fund a broad range of medical research, from research in laboratories to clinical research projects, quality of life research, computer modelling and development of robotics. We fund researchers who are doing the best quality research in our region.

We fund research into all primary brain tumours. This includes research into low or high grade brain tumours, in both adults and children.

We offer pump-priming funding to provide an opportunity for researchers, academics and clinicians in Yorkshire who are researching brain tumours, to be able to undertake proof-of-principle studies to facilitate the award of further funding. This supports research development and offers collaborative opportunities.

We continually review the research and activities that we fund to ensure that we have the right priorities in place, ensuring we are developing a strong Yorkshire base in the area of neuro-oncology.

To determine what we fund, we call for applications and then use a process called peer review for applications of more than £30,000. Our Board of Trustees make the final decision to make sure that the research we fund is of the highest quality and best value for money.

We co-fund research and collaborate with other charities and organisations to get the best potential outcome possible.

The money we spend on research is 100% reliant on voluntary income. We do not receive any government or statutory funding.
