Here at YBTC we're able to give you various resources, from guides to children's books, to help you navigate tricky conversations as a family.

Wanting to protect children from difficult news, worry and distress is completely natural.

You may feel it will bring home the reality of the situation, when you are still struggling to come to terms with it yourself. But not explaining what is happening may make them feel more vulnerable.
 
Children often know when something serious is affecting the family and people they are close to. It is important to give them the chance to talk openly about their worries and fears.


 
Here at YBTC we have a range of books and resources that may help you open up discussions:

• When Something Terrible Happens - a colouring book which encourages children to 'draw out' their feelings surrounding grief
• Someone I Know has Died - an interactive book to help children who have lost a loved one to express their feelings
• Toby Teapot's Daddy has a Poorly Lid - explores the theme of a parent who has a brain tumour for younger children.
• Muddles, Puddles and Sunshine - an activity book to help early-years children when someone has died
• When Someone Has a Very Serious Illness - a colouring book which helps children learn to cope with loss and change
• The Invisible String - an illustrated book helping children with separation anxiety, loss and grief
• Letting Go! - a mindful activity book to support children through loss, change and grief
• The Secret C: Straight Talking About Cancer - a book to help children aged 4-11 to understand cancer treatment and possible outcomes
• When Someone Very Special Dies - an illustrated book that introduces children to the concepts of loss and grief in a friendly way
• Cancer Party! - a book which explains cancer, chemo and radiotherapy in a non-scary way
• Kite Spirit - a Young Adult fiction book about a teenager learning to deal with the loss of a friend
