We're thrilled to have been awarded an amazing pot of funding from the National Lottery Community Fund to help us expand our work with brain tumour patients and their families. We'll use the funding to grow our support across Yorkshire, making it easier for anyone affected by a brain tumour to access in-person services in their local area. Currently, we offer a dedicated phone line, plus support groups and counselling sessions both online and in-person in Leeds. In the first year of the project, we aim to double the number of people accessing our support, focusing on five key areas: Wakefield, Kirklees, Calderdale, Sheffield and Hull. We'll double the number of community support groups on offer from 21 to 42 sessions, and double the number of counselling sessions available throughout the year from 114 to 228. This means that in 2021/22, an extra 150 people will be able to access our support. The lottery funding will also enable us to add three new family network events to our calendar, welcome 25 extra members to our Patient Advisory Group, and train 10 more volunteers for our Check In and Chat peer support scheme. Our CEO, Marie Peacock, said: “We’re delighted that The National Lottery Community Fund has recognised our work in this way. Now, thanks to National Lottery players we will be able to enrich the support available to people affected by a brain tumour in their own communities. This is so important because a brain tumour diagnosis is so isolating for patients and their loved ones. We want to ensure everyone has access to the support they need where they live.”
