Our trustee Phil completes Loch Ness Marathon

Mon 08 November

Our supporter and trustee, Phil Myerscough, added the tough Scottish marathon onto the list of running challenges he has completed for YBTC.
On the 11th of September, Phil should have run the Great North Run for the tenth time, but due had to pull out at the last minute due to injury.

Determined, he persevered and took on the Loch Ness Marathon on the 3rd of October, jointly fundraising for YBTC and Worldwide Cancer Research.

The race was 26.2 miles, bringing the total distance Phil has run in support of YBTC this year up to 1,000 miles. He has smashed his £500 target by raising £710 on his fundraising page, which will be split between the charities.

We asked Phil about his inspirations for signing up, and he told us:

"My fundraising over the past few years has, like many, been driven by the impact cancer has had on my family and friends. A few close friends and family members have been lost over the past few years - my brother-in-law, my old mentor and one of my closest friends included. It continues to affect our family on my partner's side at the moment, so I've seen the impact this disease can have, in all its variations. I’ve also seen the impact that charities can have with the research treatment and support that they can offer. My mum herself had breast cancer over 10 years ago and following surgery has made a full recovery, so there is good news out there too, but patients and families will always need help and support.
"When I heard about YBTC, through my business networking group, it struck a particular chord. My brother-in-law passed away at just 39 from a brain tumour, so this particular form of cancer is extremely close to home. He and my sister moved to LA - he as a computer game animator, his dream job. They were living and enjoying LA life and that was all taken away for him at such a young age which was devastating. I’m a Lancashire boy (with a Southern accent) but have lived in Yorkshire now for over 18 years. With family spread across the world, I chose to support Worldwide Cancer Research, which I've supported since 2017, raising around £8,000. But when discovering YBTC, I decided to go a stage further, and as well as fundraising I jumped at the opportunity to join the charity as a trustee. I am on hand to offer my marketing and digital experience whenever called upon and am inspired by everyone who works for YBTC and know that together we can, and are, making a difference."

We are so grateful to Phil for his incredible support as a trustee and fundraiser. Well done for completing your challenge despite Covid setbacks, injuries and weather complications! The amount you have raised will make a huge difference to the families we support, as well as funding vital research across the region.
