Thanking our amazing volunteers

Thanking our amazing volunteers

Wed 01 June

This Volunteers Week, we wanted to show our gratitude for the people who give up their time to help YBTC.
From 1-7 June each year, the UK celebrates Volunteers Week. The event is a chance to show appreciation for the incredible people who help charities to achieve their mission, and here at YBTC we'd like to say a huge thank you.

We may only be a small regional charity, but we have over 70 volunteers on board.

This includes ambassadors, trustees, placement students from universities, and the people who help out in our charity shop, marshall or run stalls at our events, and lead our support groups or answer calls to our phone line.

In 2021, our charity experienced amazing growth. We served 12,022 customers in our charity shop, welcomed people to over 25 different fundraising events and increased the number of support meetups we offered by 92%.

This simply would not have been possible without the selfless volunteers who give up their time to help us - so thank you!

We asked a few of our volunteers about their experience working with us and why they decided to become a part of Team YBTC. Here's what they said:

Steph Gillott, our events volunteer

"A few years after my husband passed away, volunteering for this charity allows me to stay connected to that part of my life. It means I can help families that have gone, or are going through what we did, from both a funding for the future and support side of things, which is invaluable.

"Keeping it local allows us to be a great community and it's fun and rewarding volunteering at all the different types of events.”

Lucinda Cohen, our ambassador

"Receiving a GBM diagnosis, you can feel very helpless. Since Mum died, being an ambassador has been a great way to channel my shock, anger and grief and do something positive and make a difference and feel helpful in what was a helpless situation. It's an absolute privilege to help other families and fundraise for this fantastic cause!"

Megan Nestor, our office volunteer

"My volunteering journey with YBTC began when I completed a placement in my third year of university. I was extremely lucky to work with such a wonderful group of people who went out of their way to make me feel welcome and like I was part of the team!

"During my placement period I attended YBTC’s first ever Dance-a-Thon, taking photos and videos of the event to share across social media. I also joined the fundraising team at Wetherby Races, selling raffle tickets and raising awareness. It was an amazing day which I will look back on as a highlight of my time at university.

"When my placement period ended, I asked to be put on the contact list for future volunteering opportunities as I quickly realised how much I would miss the team and the warm feeling that comes with helping others. I enjoy volunteering with YBTC as the fundraising they do is as it should be - fun! There is no pressure put on a volunteer, meaning that you can enjoy yourself whilst doing all you can to support an extremely important cause!"
