Step Into Strictly raises nearly £10,000

Mon 13 December

On Saturday 27th November, eight brave amateur couples took to the stage at The Engine Shed in Wetherby after 10 weeks of training.

Compered by actor Thomas Lillywhite, our Step Into Strictly event was a huge success raising over £9,500! We owe a huge thank you to all the people who helped make it happen.

Our couples, many of whom had never danced before or met their dance partner prior to taking on the challenge, did an amazing job of raising such high sponsorship, and performing two brilliant routines on the night in front of a 250-strong crowd. Well done to our winners Karola & Mark and runners up Tracey & Ian, Kevin & Maureen, Brenda & Stewart, Rich & Shelagh, Katrina & Ric, Neil & Mya and Ron & Suzy. You are all winners in our eyes for taking on this challenge!

Our Step Into Strictly 2021 Champion, Karola, said: “Thank you so much to everybody involved in making this night as perfect and special as it was. It was a truly amazing experience and we will definitely never forget the night that we became Step into Strictly winners and won the glitterball trophy. We have been fortunate to never have to deal with someone close to us having a brain tumour, but seeing what the charity was doing, and the accounts of those who have been affected, how could we not try to do our bit? We would like to thank all of the people that came to support us, and those who could not come but donated so generously to help raise much needed funds for such an amazing charity.”

We'd like to thank Former Look North presenter Harry Gration, The Dance Studio Leeds founder Katie Geddes and National Amateur Champ Ian Watson for doing stellar jobs as our judges for the evening.

Thank you to The Dance Studio Leeds Jazz and Street troupes, and John and Lyn Eyre, for wowing the crowd with spectacular showdances.

A big thanks to Steph, Mel & Chris, Howard and Melanie, for your endless patience and creativity in teaching our dancers – thanks Melanie also for being our “Tess” for the night!

We had great support from a variety of businesses and families who donated prizes for our raffle: The Durham Ox, Claire's, Philip Anthony PhotographySlingsby Gin, The Engine Shed, Neal’s Yard Remedies, the Collyers and the Waite family. And thank you to “Superteacher” Keith Clifton at Cliftons Dance Academy for offering a signed photo and a dance lesson to our auction winners!

Thank you to our amazing team of volunteers on front of house and behind the scenes that made the evening go like clockwork, and to Gemma Edwards who stepped in last minute to do our dancers’ hair and makeup!

Bands of Gold Videography were filming our dancers in action, and we can't wait to see the films they put together!

Thank you to The Engine Shed for providing an amazing venue and all their help making the event run smoothly. Thank you to Scarborough Digital for printing our tickets and flyers, Majestic Publications for producing the souvenir programme, and to our main sponsor CHAUVET Europe, who covered the costs of all entertainment and enlisted the expertise of Technical Stage Services, without whom the event could not have taken place.

There is still time to donate to our dancers' pages if you'd like to show your support: head to yorksbtc.org.uk/strictly. All funds raised will go towards supporting Yorkshire-based brain tumour patients and their families and funding vital research.
