What is the statue of Freddie Gilroy?

‘Freddie Gilroy and the Belsen Stragglers’ is a giant steel structure made by artist Ray Lonsdale. The sculpture is based on a retired minor Ray became friends with who was one of the first soldiers to relieve the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp at the end of World War II.
This piece of art represents all the normal people that were pulled out of ordinary life and forced into an extraordinary one during the World Wars.
To give you a little inspiration, we present "Freddie and The Dreamers": Shadow, Mary, Freddie, Margaret, Ruth, Dee, Annie and Shirley.
Mary, who coordinated the photo shoot said, “We all live in Scarborough and have been walking together every week for donkey’s years. Over the years we have seen lovely friends from our group come and go. We heard the idea for taking a selfie with Freddie at the Ellie’s Fund concert in January and thought it was a great way to celebrate our friendship and support BTRS.”
