You might remember Kevin and Rich from when they took to the stage in our
Step into Strictly event last year!
But when they're not wearing sequins and perfecting their fleckerls, Kevin and Rich are avid cyclists.
In 2019, they organised their own challenge to raise funds for YBTC - the "
Yorkshire Boundary Bike Ride". The challenge was set up in memory of Skipton Rotary Club president John's daughter Annette, who sadly died of a brain tumour when she was 11 years old.
The ride was 425 miles in total and the four-strong team of cyclists (who called themselves "The Four Auld Fellas") raised over
£2,960!
This year, Kevin and Rich are encouraging people to continue to support the charity while having a great time cycling, by signing up to our
Big Bike Challenge.
Kevin said: "In 2019 we assembled a team of four gents and cycled the whole of the Yorkshire county boundary to raise funds for the fantastic YBTC. This was a hard five day ride which took us over some remarkably difficult terrain.
Not only does this charity do magnificent work for many people when they most need it, it is run by people who genuinely care about what they do. They are a friendly bunch, and gave us a level of support I have never experienced in the many charity gigs I have done. The whole experience of working with them resulted in my wife and I entering their Strictly event in 2021. A scary experience as I had never danced all of my sixty-odd years!
"I'd strongly encourage anyone to get involved with YBTC. Would I encourage people to cycle? You bet I would. Not only is it a great way to get fit, it's a great social sport! Close your eyes and imagine cycling along a country lane on a sunny Spring day, listening to the birds and chatting to a bunch of pals as you eat up the miles. Looking forward to the next break for a coffee and a big piece of cake. A heavenly day with a calorie deficit at the end! Beat that if you can."
Rich said: "YBTC is very close to our hearts, as a dear friend passed away from a brain tumour seven years ago, leaving behind his wife and three children. YBTC is doing great work in supporting families through unimaginably difficult and challenging times.
"Myself and Kevin also took part in to Step into Strictly last November to raise money for the charity. We have met some wonderful people, getting involved with fundraising and had some great fun too!
"Cycling is a great way to get fit, and keep fit - I have been cycling for the last 10 years, and the memories made and sheer enjoyment gained have been amazing. I would encourage anyone to get involved in the Big Bike Challenge!"
Our
Big Bike Challenge is taking place on
Sunday 22nd May.
We'll set off from Victoria Park in Oakenshaw at 9am, and enjoy the traffic-free cycling and stunning sculptures en route to Dewsbury.
From here, you can customise your challenge - either stop here, or extend the route along the Calder Valley Greenway to Huddersfield!
This event is perfect for families, complete beginners and cycling enthusiasts alike.
It's just £10 to enter (or 2 adults and 2 children under 12 pay just £20!)
