Leeds University students recycle for Ellie's Fund

Mon 14 June

Students at the University of Leeds have been recycling their single-use items like pens and highlighters, raising money for Ellie's Fund.

Milan Sebastian Thottathil, a Sustainability Architect from the University of Leeds, is leading a project that will fund vital brain tumour research through Ellie's Fund.

Milan contacted YBTC about his idea of recycling some of the items students usually throw away at the end of term, especially used pens and other stationery.

By placing recycling bins in prominent areas of the University of Leeds campus, Milan, his team and the students will help to raise all-important funds for Yorkshire-based research. The recycling event began at the end of the assessment period in May and has already proved a huge success.

Milan said: “During assessment time in the university, we anticipate a lot of used writing instruments. We would like to focus on used writing instruments and get the maximum amount recycled from the black bins or litter. I am excited to work with YBTC to create awareness and recycle to raise funds!”

Jen Aspinall, our Community Fundraiser, said: "Ellie's Fund is an excellent way to recycle and raise funds for the vital research needed to find better treatments and ultimately a cure for brain tumours in children and adults. Milan has organised this fundraising event, which will help the environment, raise money, educate and raise awareness. It is a fantastic idea, and we welcome similar events from anyone who is interested."

A massive £65k has been raised through Ellie's Fund recycling projects to date, and Milan's event is sure to make a huge difference.

Thank you to Milan and the whole team for your help and support.
