Geoff Medd, a keen cyclist who has tackled various
cycling challenges to raise money for us in the past, is helping our Active Events co-ordinator Kate to organise and promote our
Big Bike Challenge.
Geoff told us: "When you lose a wife of 50 years, especially to such a cruel and degrading disease as a brain tumour, you need something to anchor to, as everything you assumed was permanent suddenly isn't.
"Cycling gave me the freedom and time to try and make some sense of the chaos. To be able to take in the stunning Yorkshire scenery and be in the fresh air and to just head anywhere at any time is a very healing process.
"To be a YBTC ambassador and be involved in events like this gives me the chance to try and improve the situation for people now undergoing the journey.
"There'll be no miracle cure just yet I feel but we all must keep chipping away, it'll come eventually."
The Big Bike Challenge is taking place at York Cycle Circuit, on the University campus, on Sunday 25th July. Entry is at 11.30am, the first lap is at 12pm and the event closes at 4pm. It's open to absolutely everyone and can be tailored to suit your goals, whether you want to beat a personal best, try out a new bike or learn to ride for the first time! There's no need to have your own bike as we can hire them on the day, as long as you
let us know in advance.
