Expansion of the YBTC counselling service

Expansion of the YBTC counselling service

Wed 23 December

YBTC is very keen to build on the excellent work they do to support people based in Yorkshire suffering with a brain tumour, and the carers and families that are also impacted by this devastating disease. Our counselling service is a key part of this, offering psychological support when needed.

However, we are very aware that, as 15 people who live in Yorkshire are given a brain tumour diagnosis every week, our confidential counselling service currently isn’t reaching as many people as we would like.

With that in mind, we have increased the provision by expanding our team, so we can help more people – especially during this difficult time.

Laura joins us as a Support Services Counsellor. Laura said of her role: "My role will be to provide counselling and psychological support to patients, family members and carers across Yorkshire, with an initial focus on the Wakefield and Kirklees areas.

This will be face to face, online and over the telephone – one thing lockdown has revealed is how effective online communication can be, and whilst online or telephone counselling certainly won’t be for everyone – as some people prefer to be in the room with a Counsellor – it does open up more opportunities for those who may not be able to travel easily, or are time poor.

YBTC are also looking to expand our patient and bereavement support groups across the region and I am looking forward to being involved in getting this valuable support out to more people over time.

Paula who has worked with YBTC for a number of years is also expanding her role, she said of her new challenge: “My work began with YBTC when I was approached by Sam Wilson to help set up the counselling service back in 2014. Throughout the years I have helped clients through counselling and hypnotherapy alongside being an occasional guest speaker at the Support Group.

“In 2019 there was an organisational restructure and we welcomed many new members to the team; little did I know that there was also an additional role for me! So now, as well as offering therapy to our YBTC clients, I will be helping to manage some data, with a view to reconnecting with historical members of YBTC. This will provide an excellent foundation for an expansion into Yorkshire and being part of an exceptional support co-ordinator team doing what I absolutely love, which is working with people.”
