The importance of ritual
So…what is a ritual?
A ritual is a process or a series of processes that we follow at certain times in our lives. Such as, we all have a ritual when we get up in the morning or we are choosing what to wear.
The same can be true when we are bereaved.
A ritual can help us feel centred and grounded and can also demark an experience so that emotions and events don’t blur into one. This can very helpful if we have experienced many losses and are feeling overwhelmed.
Anniversaries and certain holidays can be emotive times when we feel we need to do more to recognise the passing of our loved ones. For some, this could be a celebration of the life they had and the part they played in your life. For others, it can be a more sombre occasion where they take the time to acknowledge the sadness and notice the absence in their life.
You are still in relationship with your loved one, even though it has dramatically changed, so it is important you maintain this relationship in whatever way makes sense to you. A few examples of this are lighting a candle, talking to and asking advice of your loved one, visiting the grave or the last place they were alive, making gift items out of clothes they wore and having meaningful conversations about them. There is no limit to the way we continue our bond with them and there is no timescale for how long this should last. It is an individual process.
