Shop Volunteer

We're looking for volunteers who can assist in the day-to-day running of our charity shop and café, No 31, to maximise sales.

We want to make sure that everyone who visits us has a great experience; we never forget the contribution our shop makes to those diagnosed with a brain tumour and their families across Yorkshire.

Your role can be flexible depending on your skills and experience.

What does the role involve?

As a shop volunteer your main tasks will be:

  • Assisting with processing donations, including sorting, steaming, sizing, pricing and hanging
  • Clearing rubbish as and when needed
  • Restocking rails and shelves
  • Serving and assisting customers
  • Operating the till and handling cash
  • Preparing drinks and serving customers
  • Keeping all areas clean and tidy
  • Assisting with displays and coming up with creative ideas to attract customers
  • Stocktaking and other administrative tasks
  • Sourcing other donations for the shop to sell
  • Assisting with health and safety checks

Event Volunteer

We're looking for volunteers to help us out at a range of events this year. All our face-to-face events were either cancelled or postponed in 2020 due to the pandemic. In 2021 we want to introduce events back safely for those who are comfortable attending them, but we will also be continuing our virtual events and aiming to make all our events as accessible as possible.

What does the role involve?

We will send you a list of all our events for 2021. You can choose which events you would like to volunteer at – you can do as many as you like.
You may prefer to help every now and then or have a more structured role with set days and times  it all helps!

Our events range from running or cycling challenges, family fun days, fairs, car boot sales, running stalls at our Christmas fair, a glamourous Step into Strictly dancing show and other events that aim to bring people affected by a brain tumour together.

As an event volunteer your role could involve:

  • Meeting and greeting guests
  • Marshalling at a challenge event along the route and cheering on our participants
  • Running a stall – selling our merchandise, running a tombola or raffle to raise money
  • Selling raffle tickets
  • Serving light refreshments
  • Helping to set up or dismantle tables, chairs, equipment etc
All volunteers will be fully briefed before any event. We'll give you some key facts about the charity, just in case anyone asks, but there will always be a member of staff or other volunteers on hand to help! And it goes without saying that your safety will always be our priority.

Volunteer Greeter

We're looking for volunteers to help greet our customers at No 31.

After being closed for most of 2020 due to the pandemic, it has been great to be back at our charity shop and takeaway café at No 31 Otley Road in Headingley, greeting all of our loyal customers again. We have been fortunate to have had lots of stock donated, which we need help sorting and getting onto the shop floor. Due to restrictions still in place we need a volunteer greeter to welcome people safely back into our shop.

What does the role involve?

We are looking for volunteers to cover our opening times, which are Monday to Saturday from 10am to 4.30pm. If you can offer a few hours or a few days we can organise a rota for volunteers.

No 31 is located on a busy high street so our volunteer greeters will be the first point of contact for customers visiting our charity shop and café.

The role will involve:
  • Meeting and greeting shoppers and visitors at the door of the shop
  • Managing queues - to ensure we follow the rules of no more than 6 people in the shop at a time and kindly asking people to wait if needed before they enter the shop
  • Advising customers of the one-way system, to keep all customers socially-distanced and safe, while enjoying their shopping experience
  • Pointing out our hand sanitising station on entry
  • Generally assisting customers on the shop floor
All volunteers will be fully briefed and prepared before volunteering with YBTC. You will be given some key facts about the charity, just in case anyone asks, however do not worry as there will always be another member of staff or volunteer on hand to help! And of course we will always have your safety as our priority.

What’s in it for me?

By volunteering for YBTC, as well as helping us to fund research and support local families, you can:

  • Pick up valuable skills and experience
  • Enhance your CV and boost your employment prospects
  • Meet new people, get to know your local community and make friends
  • Do something different and extremely rewarding with your spare time
  • Improve your own health and well-being

Why should I volunteer for YBTC?

  • Over 1000 people are diagnosed with a brain tumour across Yorkshire & the Humber each year.
  • Around 10% of these people are under 18 years old.
  • Of all cancers, brain tumours are the biggest killer of people under 40 years old.
  • Lack of funding and research in this field means survival rates have not improved in 40 years.
  • Situated in the control centre for thinking, remembering, feeling & moving, brain tumours are hard to treat.
  • Only one third of patients survive for 5 years from diagnosis of a malignant brain tumour.
  • Currently, brain tumours cannot be prevented because their cause is still unknown.
  • There are over 120 different types of brain tumour, which makes treatment very complicated.
We do not receive any Government funding and rely on donations to continue doing what we do. Volunteers are vital to ensure we can continue to fund research and continue our support! So, join #TeamYBTC today - click here for an application form.
