Dawn
In September 2016 my husband was diagnosed with a grade 3 brain tumour, which turned our world upside down. He was a very positive and brave man and determined that the tumour wasn't going to beat him. He lived a year longer than predicted and sadly passed away on June 4th 2019.
We both attended the YBTC support groups and often went into the shop at Headingley for coffee, cake, and a chat. We enjoyed it so much that I decided I would like to bake some cakes for the shop. They soon became popular and were very well received.
I get a lot of pleasure out of volunteering and baking alike. It gives me a sense of belonging to this deserving charity, which helped me and my husband along the way. I get involved in lots of events from cake stalls at local fairs and the YBTC Christmas fairs, helping at the YBTC Christmas Ball and challenge events, to volunteering in the YBTC shop and creating home-baked prizes for fundraising events.
I have made lots of friends through the charity and they laugh and cry with me. It’s great to be around like-minded people that have gone through similar experiences. I am proud to be YBTC’s Cake Ambassador, something I now do in memory of my wonderful husband.
After attending the support groups, I met my new husband Chris, whose wife also passed away to a brain tumour. We are now married, and both continue to help with the charity. For the first time, in December 2022, we ran a cake stall at the Otley Victorian Fayre. We enjoyed it very much and will continue to help at these events in the future.
